Bio
Nandita Godbole is an internationally known author, food writer, entrepreneur, speaker, and clay artist; a multi-faceted presence in the food and wellness industry. While growing up in Mumbai, India, Nandita was more often in her mother's kitchen than elsewhere, preferring to either forage or harvest fruits in the orchards of their summer home in the countryside over seeking a playground. Cooking, a necessary life skill, quickly became a passion. As a teenager, she took notes from Madhur Jaffrey, Sanjeev Kapoor, Jacques Pepin, Madeleine Kamman and Julia Child through their cable shows. When she came to the US as a student (1995), the likes of Martha Stewart and Ina Garten continued to inspire but also underscored the need for representation. Nandita established her brand Curry Cravings(TM) LLC in 2004 as a tongue-in-cheek invitation to decolonize concepts like curry powder, golden milk, and tautological curiosities like chai-tea, naan-bread etc through dialog and dinner; encouraging holistic health and everyday mindfulness. She embarked on a quest to explore these topics voraciously through her cookbooks, writing, and many artistic pursuits. As a cookbook author, Nandita simplifies Indian cuisine. Her first cookbook "A Dozen Ways to Celebrate" explores lavish Indian dinner parties; "Crack the Code" decodes Indian recipes; "Roti" explores Indian flatbreads and fixings. Her family-inspired fiction "Ten Thousand Tongues" reveals the culinary legacies from eight matriarchs. Her sixth cookbook "Seven Pots of Tea: an Ayurvedic approach to sips & nosh" examines the intersection of Ayurvedic traditions, classic Indian beverages and chai. Continuing to decode Indian cuisine, Nandita's upcoming cookbook “Masaleydaar: classic Indian spice blends” (2022) unmasks a long-standing misconception that Indian cuisine is a monolith synonymous with curry powder and heat. Masaleydaar only scratches the surface of India's dozens of complex gastronomic regions through three dozen iconic regional Indian spice blends, showcasing classic delicacies and inspired dishes for the modern kitchen. Her cookbook readers span over 30 countries. For her work as an author and entrepreneur, Nandita has been profiled in The Boston Globe and interviewed on NBC-Asian America, Marketplace-NPR, WABE (Atlanta's NPR) and WREK (Georgia Tech Radio). Her perspectives appear in BBC-Futures, Forbes, Business Insider, Martha Stewart Living, Bon Appetit, CNTraveler, Publishers Weekly, and more. She has been invited to speak about the history of Indian cuisine, entrepreneurship, authorship, everyday wellness as well as cultural appropriation for organizations like IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals), KIND® Bars, Indian Consulate (Atlanta), Culinary Historians of Los Angeles, Culinary Historians of San Diego, the University of California (Riverside), Melissa’s Produce and others. Additionally, Nandita has written for Washington Post, Healthline, Whetstone Magazine, Epicurious, Food.com, Thrillist, Eater, Reader's Digest, The Spruce Eats, Plate Magazine, AirbnB, Wine4Food, Atlanta Magazine, PopSugar, and others. Her food photography has also appeared on CNN. Having yearned for culturally respectful and modern mediums to showcase her creations, Nandita recently began exploring clay. In the Spring of 2022, she launched Mṛttikā by Nandita. Mṛttikā means Fragrant Earth in Sanskrit. As an homage to her Indian heritage, Mṛttikā by Nandita embraces Indian aesthetics and its deep connection to Nature. Mṛttikā by Nandita celebrates the earthy and granular quality of Indian cuisine through its colors, forms, and purpose. Her hand-made pottery honors Indian food traditions and offers a narrative beyond the preparation. Her wheel thrown and hand-built pieces combine functionality with art and memorable narrative storytelling. Nandita is a self-taught food professional raised in a family of self-taught food professionals. She considers her at-home training from her grandfather and mother at par with perspectives learned across two Masters' Degrees, one in Landscape Architecture (Univ. of Illinois) and another in Botany & Ethnobotany (Univ. of Mumbai). Her life experiences, education and careers continue to shape, enhance and inspire all her work fostering her commitment to both context and connection. Nandita is an active member of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) and International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP). Nandita divides her time between Atlanta, GA, Los Angeles, CA, and San Francisco, CA. Her social media handle is @currycravings (IG & Twitter).
